Although this week's readings were referring to balance and symmetry in an artistic way the line "a symmetrical design, which has the same elements on at least two sides along a common axis, is inherently stable" (29) got me thinking about the divide between the rich and the poor. Thinking of the two classes as the different elements and society as our common axis, it becomes clear that society is inherently unstable. I wanted to make a statement against the 1% of the population that rules over the remaining 99% with an iron fist. And while I could have made a balanced and symmetrical piece, I thought the best way to convey the unbalanced nature of this relationship was to have an unbalanced and asymmetrical piece to make the viewer get a feeling for the disproportionate and unbalanced dynamic.

My favorite part about this exploration of color was the concept of complementary colors. I think its amazing that colors that are opposites on the color wheel compliment one another so well and I wanted to play around with this so I tried to use complimentary colors according to Procreates color wheel. The quote Marc Chagall at the beginning of this weeks reading, and the fact that I was gonna have to switch from my typical dark pallets to colorful ones got me thinking of the music video for My Favorite Part by Mac Miller and Ariana Grande. The video starts off silent and in black and white, then suddenly shifts to color and sound; and in the video Mac and Ariana are neighbors and become lovers as the video goes on so the opening quote seemed fitting.

 Hello... My Name is Otto Hacker I like to use the pen name shadybean, hence the tittle of this blog. I am junior at Lawrence University. I am currently living in Santa fe New Mexico with my family which gets crazy at times but, it is what it is. I find it hard for me to talk about myself because... well, I kinda don't know who I really am. i'm still trying to figure that out, although I have a rough idea of who I am I can't put that in to words, so hopefully you will get a better sense of who I am through the art I post.  This is how I feel when asked to talk about myself  I have a lot I want to say as an artist because I find it easier to express things through art than through words. In my experience art seems to touch peoples souls and change them much more effectively than any other form of rhetoric (although I consider rhetoric to be an art form).
